Removable drives like USB flash drives or external hard disks should not be unplugged from your PC when there is data transfer activity.
To make sure it’s safe to unplug a USB storage device, you’ll have to tell Windows stop all connections and data transfer activities.
To remove a USB storage device:
Method 1
Right-click the removable drive icon on the system tray, then click Safely Remove Hardware. Then click the Stop button inside the Safely Remove Hardware dialog. See Method 2 below for a better and quick way.
Method 2
The faster way is to left-click on the removable drive icon, then click Safely remove USB mass storage device. (If you have more than one storage device plugged in, all the connected USB storage devices will be shown for you to choose)
